育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院，始建于1920年。解放后，由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月，改为广州市育才小学。1956年，育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小，后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月，由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验，与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年，复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生，并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”，后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月，育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并，搬迁到东风东路782号，保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

在育才小学里有一位中国好人——郭纪勇老师。他是天河区龙洞街龙洞小学退休教师。郭老师孤寡一生，以校为家，他关爱所有的学生，用他的实际行动为学生树立了榜样。他为学校清理垃圾，检查课室的门窗，默默地为学校奉献一切。
2010年是郭老师八十寿辰，他以育才小学的名义向慈善机构捐款1260元。他说，学校里有1260位学生，他代表每位学生捐款一元，希望孩子们像他一样，能成为一个有爱心的人。同时，作为一名退休教师，在每年的教师节，他都会为学校的每一位老师送上节日的祝福。他亲自去蛋糕店为老师定制蛋糕，老师的桌面上都会端端正正地摆上两个新鲜的蛋糕。吃着这充满爱心的蛋糕，所有老师都说郭老师真是楷模，是我们前进的动力。郭老师一辈子都在关心教育，特别是关心弱势群体的教育情况。学校临近广州市福利院，他也因此与福利院结下了不解之缘。早在儿童福利基金成立的时候，他就托人送上了200元表示爱心。
2002年，儿童福利院要建教学楼，他一下就捐出了1万元。在郭老师的房间里，还能看到很多收据，这些都是他捐款的证明。哪里需要帮助，只要郭老师知道，哪里就一定能看到他的身影。他长期帮助村内无血缘亲缘关系的的孤寡老人，经常为他们送去菜米油盐，有时老师给他送的点心，他都分成几份，给这些孤寡老人送去。郭老师对慈善事业倾注了浓厚感情。
从2006年6月份龙洞慈善分会成立后，他就先后从平日节省出来的生活费中捐出了8400元，用于救助龙洞地区的困难家庭和群众解决就医、上学和生活困难。
2006年7月，强台风“碧利斯”袭击了广东东南部和珠三角部分地区，造成了人民生命财产的巨大损失，郭老师第一时间捐出了1000元。
2008年初，广东发生“冰雪”灾害，郭老师将街道送给他御寒的两张毛毯原封不动转赠给了灾区人民，自己却还是睡在草席上。“汶川地震”发生时，郭老师也是倾囊相助，捐款1000元。为弘扬中华民族尊老爱幼、和睦美满的传统家庭美德，郭老师倡议在龙洞地区开展 “好儿女，好媳妇” 评选，并捐资5000元购买奖品。
虽然现在郭纪勇老师已经离开了育才小学的所有师生！！但是所有师生都不会忘记他那默默无闻、默默奉献的精神，他的精神在龙洞永存！！
现在，育才小学已被评为“省一级学校”。广州市育才小学始创于1950年。在党和各级政府的关怀下，经过几代人的努力，对校舍进行了三次拆迁、改造，学校发生了巨大的变化，从原先一所简陋的农村祠堂小学发展为如今环境优美，设备先进的学校。2001年10月被评为广州市绿色学校，2002年10月晋升为广州市一级学校。
