育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院,始建于1920年。解放后,由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月,改为广州市育才小学。1956年,育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小,后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月,由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验,与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年,复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生,并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”,后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月,育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并,搬迁到东风东路782号,保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

育才学校经黄埔区教育局批准于1999年3月创办,现有三个校区,占地面积为28513平方米,校园环境幽雅,教学楼、科教楼气势恢弘,另建有带标准塑胶田径跑道的运动场。学校配有多媒体电教阶梯教室、网络电教室、多功能舞蹈室等24个专用室,教学设备齐全,先进。另安装校园网络教学及监护平台。2006年被批准为“广东省一级学校”。
