育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院，始建于1920年。解放后，由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月，改为广州市育才小学。1956年，育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小，后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月，由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验，与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年，复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生，并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”，后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月，育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并，搬迁到东风东路782号，保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

育才小学是广东省首批省一级学校。学校创办于1957年，由育才小学黄玉清女士资助办学。1970年，因文化大革命而停办，1985年由荔湾区委、区政府复办。育才小学原来的校舍比较残旧，学生活动的场地较小，生均只有2平方米， 与省一级学校的要求有较大的差距。市、区政府非常关心我校办学用地问题，在2001年，学校西侧橡胶五厂被征拆时的1800多平方米(价值2000多万元)的用地批拨了给我校 [3] ，生均占地面积立即扩大了一倍，教育局也马上拨出100多万元，全面改善学校的办学条件，特别是区在财政较困难的情况下，拔出200万元建设我校的校园网，使我校做到教师人手一机，学生平均六人一机，各教室都有教学平台，为现代信息技术教育的开展提供了优越的条件。特别是在2005年7月，学校接管原荔湾实验学校的学生和教学场地。学校由两个校区组成，原中山八路校区为东校区，荔港南湾校区为西校区。校园占地面积为15500平方米，学校建筑面积为21500平方米。学校现有教学班56个，学生2280人，教职员工156人。
