育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院,始建于1920年。解放后,由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月,改为广州市育才小学。1956年,育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小,后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月,由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验,与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年,复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生,并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”,后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月,育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并,搬迁到东风东路782号,保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

育才小学开办于1946年,原址是一座水神庙,校舍窄小,设备简陋,过去是典型的麻雀学校。 2003年10月,在区委、区政府、区教育局等领导的重视和关怀下,学校启动了教育综合改造工程,珠光路小学与北京路小学合并,进行全面扩建,通过撤并增加面积1400平方米。改造后学校占地面积4085平方米,建筑面积达6800平方米。校园布局合理,设备齐全,活动场所从原来的不足半个篮球场,扩建为两个篮球场、一个风雨操场和60米跑道的活动场地,还有一个长度近20米的室内游泳池。学校绿化覆盖率约56%。学校的化、美化把教育环境装点得舒适幽雅,为孩子们提供了良好的学习条件。

育才小学是广东省首批省一级学校。学校创办于1957年,由育才小学黄玉清女士资助办学。1970年,因文化大革命而停办,1985年由荔湾区委、区政府复办。育才小学原来的校舍比较残旧,学生活动的场地较小,生均只有2平方米, 与省一级学校的要求有较大的差距。市、区政府非常关心我校办学用地问题,在2001年,学校西侧橡胶五厂被征拆时的1800多平方米(价值2000多万元)的用地批拨了给我校 [3] ,生均占地面积立即扩大了一倍,教育局也马上拨出100多万元,全面改善学校的办学条件,特别是区在财政较困难的情况下,拔出200万元建设我校的校园网,使我校做到教师人手一机,学生平均六人一机,各教室都有教学平台,为现代信息技术教育的开展提供了优越的条件。特别是在2005年7月,学校接管原荔湾实验学校的学生和教学场地。学校由两个校区组成,原中山八路校区为东校区,荔港南湾校区为西校区。校园占地面积为15500平方米,学校建筑面积为21500平方米。学校现有教学班56个,学生2280人,教职员工156人。
