育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院,始建于1920年。解放后,由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月,改为广州市育才小学。1956年,育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小,后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月,由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验,与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年,复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生,并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”,后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月,育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并,搬迁到东风东路782号,保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

育才小学的前身称“国光小学”,创办于1946年6月,当时正值抗日战争胜利后,育才热心教育的族胞目睹广州市失学儿童日益增多,商议开办学校。征得该旗各姓代表和宗祠管理人的同意,将位于光塔路89号的宗祠(即现在的广州市育才小学校址)作为校舍,定名“国光小学”取“国土重光”之意,以表达纪念抗日战争胜利。1946年9月正式开课,为全国首家育才小学。 [2]

广州市育才小学是全国首家以满育才命名的学校,也是广东省唯一一所育才学校,学校原址占地面积仅1464平方米,属于典型的“麻雀小学”。
区财政加大对民族教育的投入,为满族小学新校区征地、建设等投入7200多万元,通过合并、扩建、新建形式,使育才小学成为“一校三区”。
国光小学开办之初,按“完全小学”的规格开设6个年级,每级一个教学班,有专任教职员8人、学生109人。民国37年(1948年)暑期,在满族镶红旗管理组支持下,决定自行筹款在校舍前座增建二楼,面积为200平方米,用作课室和活动场地,学生增至228人,其中,满族学生占30%,专任教职员12人。
1949年10月14日,广州解放,国光小学继续上课。1950年7月12日,广州市人民政府教育局以教小第二八七六号文批示:准予广州市私立国光小学重新备案,批准汪宗猷继任校长,李剑晖任教导主任。
1952年11月广东省第一届民族工作会议后,根据满族代表的意见和要求,省民族事务委员会转请广州市人民政府办理。广州市教育局同意满族国光小学适当发展一部分,在经费上予以补助,以收容满族子弟。从此,学校教职员工的待遇、满族学生收费标准均按公立学校办理,学校的管理及人事调派,由广州市北区人民政府领导。到1952学年度时,满族学生比例增长到35%,学校设备亦较前完善。增设了两个分教处及一个操场。?
1954年11月,学校领导人汪宗猷主动将育才小学全部财产献给政府,由广州市教育局接办,为尊重学校的历史,将校名改为“广州国光小学”,随即拨款修建校舍。主管民族事务的广州市民政局,每年还拨给少数民族教育事业费,作为增加设备、补助满族师生之用。到1956学年度,在该校就读的满族学生已有322人,占全校学生人数的64.15%。1956年8月,广州市教育局接受学校及满族人民的意见,将广州国光小学命名为“广州市育才小学”。
