育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院,始建于1920年。解放后,由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月,改为广州市育才小学。1956年,育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小,后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月,由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验,与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年,复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生,并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”,后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月,育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并,搬迁到东风东路782号,保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

学校于1995年被评为省一级学校。
1991年在区、镇、村三级政府的关怀下,由香港爱国同胞朱恩余先生夫妇捐赠五十七万元,区、镇政府拔款、村委投入和村民集资共一百多万元,扩建改造旧校舍,新校舍1992年正式落成。 学校现占地面积12850平方米,建筑面积约4300平方米,校园绿化覆盖率68%。学校教育教学设备不断改善,拥有200米环行跑道及小型足球场一个,篮球场两个,并配备了多媒体电教室、电子阅览室、心理健康咨询室等多个专用室场。目前,学校在编教师78人、学生1350余人、教学班32个。

广州市育才小学创建于1946年,现有19个教学班,学生728名,教职工48名。学校现有特级教师1人,南粤优秀班主任1人,市优秀班主任3人,优秀教育工作者1人,市优秀教师4人,高级教师44人,具有本科学历的37人。雄厚的师资力量,为学校大力推行素质教育,不断提高办学水平奠定了坚实的基础。
