育才学校的前身是基督教培贤女子神学院，始建于1920年。解放后，由市人民政府接管办起工农速成中学。1953年8月，改为广州市育才小学。1956年，育才小学与市立东区二小、东区八小、私立道青小学合并为保安街二小，后称寺贝通津小学。1960年9月，由市教育局指定进行十年一贯制试验，与市七中合为广州师院附属实验学校。1964年，复名寺贝通津小学。1986年9月开始在三至五年级开设体育班。1988年——1989年度先后招收小学和初中一年级体育生，并于1988年5月定名为“东山区育才体育运动实验学校”，后又定名为“东山区育才学校”。2001年被评为广州市一级学校。2003年2月，育才学校与育鹰小学、水均岗小学三所学校合并，搬迁到东风东路782号，保留了“东山区育才学校”的校名。

育才小学原来的校舍场地面积约达4250平方米，后因市政工程广园路的开通和扩建学校先后四次向后退让，使学校的占地面积不断缩小。学校现占地1909平方米，建筑面积4261平方米。教学设施完善，有校园网络系统和监控系统。功能教室齐全，有多媒体电教室、美术室、心理咨询室、科学实验室等专用场室，还建有电视台、生物园等。每个教室配备了简易教学平台和彩色电视机，教师每人一台电脑。

Qizhi school is a nine-year compulsory education special school, from 1985 to the region to recruit the first special class, 1990 officially listed as a nine-year public school for mental retardation.
